A lot of folks have trouble with this film. They are turned off by the over-the-top violence, mayhem, and sex. What they don’t understand is that it is nothing more than a really well-made exploitation film. Remember those? Movies which had no higher agenda than providing plenty of fun, cheap thrills, like gratuitous sex and violence? Many of them were made in the late ’60s and throughout the ’70s? Like Women In Prison films? Blaxploitation? Car-racing movies? Slasher films? Russ Meyer movies? Anyone? Well, for those who DO remember, and who don’t need every flick they see to contain lofty statements about the nature of mankind and the universe, you will love this movie. The cast is great: I mean, come on, Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, Fred Williamson… even Quentin, who can’t act, is utilized effectively. Clooney has a great role which no one seemed to appreciate, Hayek does a lewd dance with a snake which will make your shorts explode, and Cheech Marin is, as always, a laugh riot. This film is at fever pitch every step of the way and contains plenty of Rodriguez camera-acrobatics and clever Tarantino dialogue. Please understand, people, this film IS trash. Good, fun, doesn’t-take-itself-at-all-seriously trash! God love it!

Having trouble finding a good vampire flick that’s exciting and scary? Looking for something that doesn’t abide by regular horror genera rules? “From Dusk Till Dawn” may be the one to choose. With a sizzling screenplay by Quentin Tarantino and perfectly directed by Robert Rodriguez, this is a horror/thriller to remember.

The Gecko brothers are two extremely violent criminals who end up taking a family hostage. The family is forced to drive the notorious brothers to the end of the border. They end up making a pit stop at a Mexican bar, where the brothers are supposed to meet their contact. However, things get out of hand when it turns out that the place is contaminated with vampire strippers and truckers. You add all of those elements together and you get one hell of a ride that you’ll never forget.

I’m not the biggest fan of vampires, but I thought this was an EXCELLENT movie. It’s unpredictable and exhilarating. You have no idea where the movie will take you until it’s all said and done. This is not your ordinary vampire flick, and that’s what makes this movie so great. It’s a breath of fresh air and so much more.

The acting really makes the movie what it is. George Clooney gives a remarkable performance (this was before he was the big star that he is today). Quentin Tarantino does a great job of contributing dark and chaotic humor to the film with his role. Other major players include Harvey Keitel, Juliet Lewis, Cheech Marin and plenty more. The screenplay by Tarantino is great and never misses a beat. It’s packed with snappy dialogue that one would not expect to hear in a horror movie. Rodriguez does an exceptional job of directing as well.

I don’t have the fully loaded version of the movie, so I am stuck with the plain version for now. The picture quality looks pretty good, considering that it isn’t enhanced for widescreen TVs. The sound is really lacking, though. I had to keep fumbling around with the volume controls throughout the movie, as it kept going from being quiet to extremely loud. That might be reason enough to get the Collector’s Edition of the film. A theatrical trailer and teaser trailer are both included on the DVD, but those are the only extra features you’ll find on this DVD version.

“From Dusk Till Dawn” is a wildly entertaining flick that really stands out from the others. It has some extremely funny moments, as well as some very scary and exciting sequences. This movie pretty much has it all. If you’re looking for a horror/thriller movie that isn’t like the rest, give this one a try. This is definitely one of my favorites.

“Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” is perhaps the best movie ever made. Unlike other campy movies, there are virtually no lulls — each scene is packed with brilliant one-liners, ludicrious characters (portrayed by equally crazy actors), fun music, and tons of hairspray. While Roger Ebert has claimed that the movie was intended to be satirical and hillarious, its dated-ness adds to the effect, inadvertently creating the funniest and most watchable movie of the entire Russ Meyer catalouge (though other gems of Meyer’s include “Supervixens,” “Vixen,” “Up,” and the delightful, “Fater Pussycat! Kill! Kill!”). Dolly Reed’s often failed attempt at an American accent only adds to the fun. The reason “BVD” isn’t more widley loved: it takes a person with certain sense of humor to enjoy the high level of camp this film offers. If you enjoy being tricked into thinking that a legitimately excellent film is really so bad that it’s good, indulge yourself in the debauchery.

“Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” is released in Japan as “Wild Party,” and the latter title might have told you everthing you see in it; and the director is Russ Meyer, famous for his movies like “Faster Pussycat, Kill!, Kill!” and “Vixen”….. Oh, if you haven’t seen them, you can guess the contents, I’m sure.

Actually, “Beyond,” which major studio 20th Century Fox asked Meyer to direct, is less outrageous, considering the track record this cult director had made, and was going to make. But still, for ordinary people, it is a shocking experience to see almost every genre is mixed in it: love story (too corny one), a sucess story (of Josie and the Pussycats-like rock band, I mean it), and even a gory horror movie (with the sound of 20th Century Fox’s trademark fanfare, and Richard Wagner’s classic you have heard in Coppola’s very famous film!). And within less than 2 hours!!

However, remember, those were the days. Don’t take anything too seriously. Besides, the soundtrack is great and if you like those songs of 1960s, you will love it. My favorite is “Candy Man,” an Animals-type song, and believe it or not, in Japan they released a single cut from the soundtrack with the credit of Carrie Nations, the fictional band Dolly Read and others play in “Beyond.” Oh, I almost forgot to say, you have a glimpse of “Strawberry Alarm Clock,” psychedelic rock band that got the No.1 of the Billboard Chart with their “Incense and Peppermint,” which you heard in “Austin Powers.” They play it here, but sorry, it’s lip-sync. And look for Pam Grier (credited as Pamela Grier), of “Jackie Brown.”

Enjoy the extremism of filmmaking, I dare you.

(Technical thing: as the original film was shot in cinemascope, and Russ Meyer uses the screen wide, some scenes lose the impact on TV’s small screen. Still, there is unmistakeably Russ Meyer’s touch here and there in the movie. Don’t miss it.)

This is one of my all time favorite horror series. All three movies look and sound better than I have ever seen. The original Omen comes loaded with extra features on Blu-ray. Omen 2 and 3 however have nothing extra on them that did not appear on the DVD editions. This was a little disappointing for me. At least they could have thrown in a trivia track or something. The Omen remake is the same exact disc that was previously released on Blu. My one BIG complaint about this set would have to be the packaging. Considering the price of the set, it comes packaged in a very shoddily made box. I’m not sure if this is supposed to be “Earth Friendly” by not using any plastic housing for the discs, but Fox seriously dropped the ball on the packaging. The outer case has very cool artwork, but it is not sturdy at all. The movies are housed on a fold out inner jacket where each movie is simply held in place with a foam rubber hub. There is no booklet or anything else. Not only is the box cheaply constructed, it is also waaaay too big for a Blu-ray. It is about the size of a regular DVD, which causes it to really stick out amongst the rest of my collection.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Omen Collection! Click Here

Bottom Line: If you love the Omen series as much as I, you won’t be disappointed with the actual movies. However, be warned that the packaging is really not in keeping with other sets in this price range (e.g. The Matrix, The Godfather)

Packaging: 20th Century Fox should be ashamed of the packaging for this disc set. I have collected movies for over 25 years. This included VHS, LaserDisc, DVDs and Blu-Rays. I currently own over 3500 DVD/Blu-Rays. I typically don’t submit reviews, but the Omen (original) is one of my favorite movies. Regrettably, the packaging is one of the worst I’ve seen. It remindes me of the cheap Warner Brother’s cardboard covers. But worse, this cover doesn’t even have standard spindle retainers. The cover is a thin (too thin) carboard with adhesive circular foam spindles. On the copy I receive the “security tag” was glued to the foam spindle. In order to remove the disc, I had to pull off the security tag which in turn pulled off the spindle. I now have a new collection with 1 disc that won’t stay in the case.

Move/Transfer: The movies are great. The Omen 1 and 2 hold up well and are great movies. The Omen III is not up to par with the first 2, but completes the series. The new version does not have the magic of the original Omen (missing the well acted transformation of Gregory Peck). The video and audio transfers are both very good.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Omen Collection! Click Here

Despite the packaging, I’m happy to see the collection on Blu-Ray. I may try and purchase each movie seperately in an effort to get the standard Blu-Ray covers. The packaging issue is not limited to The Omen. The irregular packaging of The Planet of the Apes suffers as well. When will the studios spend the extra 20 cents and standardize the packaging which will help with disc storage, and with disc protection over time.

I could tell from the first episode when it first aired that this would be very different from both G1 and BW, which I and countless others had grown up watching, and cherished. The series as a whole touched home for me on many levels; I got and understood instantly what was trying to be said and done with the series, especially messages being sent concerning Primal and Rhinox. What really surprised me was the uses of the word “genocide” and “fanatasism” among others. Even more so were lines such as “No planet is alive, Optimus; merely INFESTED, and I intend to restore it to its natural condition”. And “The seeds of YOUR future lie in RUINS.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Transformers Beast Machines – The Complete Series! Click Here

I still find it difficult to fully accept how DARK and DIFFERENT this show is. Ultimately, I feel that the series as a whole is a CRITICAL story that had to be told. There are very obvious references to what happened during WW2 concerning the ‘maximal shell yards’ as they’re called during “Revelations Part 1 and 2″, another name for the concentration camps. I experienced utter shock at what was exposed in those episodes, and the shock hasn’t completely subsided. Then there is Primal’s “shock revelation” during “Fallout”, another storyline that is minutely ever seen on “kids” networks. A cool G1 reference that I haven’t seen anyone else mention is from “Endgame 3″, right after Primal says “Say farewell to arms, Megatron.” He just stands in the background of the fire, missing half of his left arm down from the elbow. In the G1 episode “Dark Awakening”, Zombie Optimus’ arm pops off while he’s trying to fight Hotrod.

I can easily understand and accept all the inherent “problems” this show had; I was one of them for a while. One thing I tell people who are always shocked by my description of the series, is that this is, for all intents and purposes, is a CGI/sci-fi version of Schindler’s List. I studied WW2 as a requirement in junior high, and the connections are unmistakeable between the that time period and what happened during the course of this show. There is even an obvious connection between Megatron and Hitler. They both wanted to eradicate a part of themselves in others that they couldn’t face in themselves: Hitler’s particular religion he was born into, and Megatron wanted to eradicate his Beast Mode, something he clearly shared with his enemies.

I am very glad I decided to get this on DVD; it’s too important a story to not view and learn from. Most of the episodes were written by the head writers of the Fox Kids X-Men show from the 1990s, and that series has tons of references to WW2 and other issues throughout the series. It’s no surprise that the writers incorporated those elements and amplified them.

I highly recommend this series.

While Beast Machines was not as Good as Beast Wars, it’s still a good series and better than a lot of people are giving it credit for. Beast Wars was pretty big shoes to fill. After years of no new transformers animation, Beast Wars came out of nowhere to be a bigger hit than anyone ever expected. It was able to capture even the support of original Transformers fans by making a strong connection to that original series and even having a few G1 transformers show up.

Beast machines is decidedly darker and grittier than Beast Wars. Here the Maximals find themselves back on Cyberton (somehow) and further they are locked into their beastmodes, and also suffering amnesia. To make matters worse they’re pursued by an army of tank drones who attack relentlessly. Thus would begin the running theme of the Maximals on the run and trying to find out what exactly happened to their homeworld. Throughout they encounter old friends and enemies and old friends in new guises as they eventually learn to transform (or perhaps morph is the better word).

I consider Beast Machines a very good entry in Transformers lore and continuity. Yes some changes were made to character’s personalities but it fit perfectly well with the whole plot of the new show. All 26 epsisodes are included and I’m really happy they put out the entire series in one boxed set.

Great music!!

There are 15 nursery rhymes in this deligtful DVD with a mix of kids, animals, puppets, animation and model trains. A dinosauer and bear(in costume)often accompany the rhymes featuring kids. At 15 mos my grand daughter was glued to Old MacDonald Had a Farm, the first nursery rhyme, then ignored the rest. Now at 19mos she sits glued to almost all of them. Eventually we’ll be reciting the alphabet and numbers 1-10 as we sing along with the rhymes. Twinkle,Twinkle Liitle Star also includes the alphabet. Apples and Bananas is upbeat with kids munching apples and bananas along with the bear and dinosauer at a vegetable stand. Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed is the last song and has a lively beat.

Lionsgate has announced a new DVD release of High Noon with new special features. There is what appears to be a reliable report, though unconfirmed, that it will include a new transfer of the film, restored by Paramount. The current and older DVDs are only of average video and audio quality.

Buy,Download, Or Stream High Noon! Click Here

This a true classic, combining traditional Western themes with contemporary concerns about popular acquiescence to evil, done in a gripping, unusual (nearly real-time) way, with great actors.

Town marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper) is caught between his new pacifist Quaker wife Amy (Grace Kelly) and a felt duty to face down evil men coming on the noon train to take revenge on him (and presumably cause whatever other trouble they please). Most of the drama takes place in the lead-up to a climactic battle, as the townspeople choose whether to support Kane with action or to let him stand alone. Amy too must choose between her spouse and her own moral beliefs. The tension builds relentlessly as we see clocks ticking towards noon. The innovative black and white cinematography emphasizes the dramatic points, while the internal drama is captured in Cooper’s face.

Buy,Download, Or Stream High Noon! Click Here

The new DVD features are these:

– “Inside High Noon,” a 50-minute documentary on the making of the film (see below for more on this)

– “Tex Ritter: A Visit to Carthage, Texas,” on the Tex Ritter Museum

– the full performance of “Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin’” from the Jimmy Dean TV Show

The features carried over from the current release are:

– commentary with Gary Cooper’s daughter Maria Cooper Janis, screenwriter Carl Foreman’s son Jonathan Foreman, director Fred Zinneman’s son Tim Zinnemann and Tex Ritter’s son John Ritter

– “The Making of High Noon” featurette

– “Behind High Noon” featurette

– radio broadcast with Tex Ritter

Whether the new features will warrant an upgrade is a matter of personal preference, of course. A 50-minute documentary could be quite interesting, if it’s well done.

It does sound interesting. The “new” documentary, actually made a couple years ago but shelved until now, is by film and Gary Cooper expert John Mulholland. It’s expected to cover, among other things, the conflict between Cooper and John Wayne over the participation of the blacklisted screenwriter Carl Foreman. Given that the film is intended in part as an allegory of the public’s acquiescence in the Red Scare, this will have more than the usual gossipy behind-the-scenes relevance. It includes interviews with three of the children of the principles who participated in the DVD audio commentary: Cooper’s daughter Maria, director Zinneman’s son Tim, and Foreman’s son Jonathan. There are also interviews with Grace Kelly’s son Prince Albert of Monaco, Western and film historians Brian Garfield, Lee Clark Mitchell, Stephen Prince and Meir Ribalow, and High Noon fan President Bill Clinton. The narration is by actor Frank Langella.

Lack of agreement between Paramount and Lionsgate prevented the earlier release of a restored transfer and the documentary, in case you’re wondering why this didn’t come out before.

(Amazon has a habit of removing or not even accepting outside links, but if you want to read more about this, some of the more interesting tidbits are from a discussion at hometheaterforum. Just do a web search for “high noon” plus “ultimate collector’s edition” or “inside high noon” and such keywords to find the links–easy to find.)

A parting note on the ethical side of the film. While everyone can appreciate the strength of Cooper’s character and the contrast to the weakness of others, which is no doubt the intended moral focus, we can wonder why the seemingly parallel choices facing Will and Amy are treated differently, with one portrayed heroically for choosing perceived broader duty over duty to spouse, while the other is seemingly approved in doing the opposite (those who have seen the movie will be able to see how that is). I’m not sure writer Foreman saw that parallel as I put it here, and maybe there are good reasons to argue they aren’t really parallel. It could be a statement about the limits of pacifism, or it could be a reflection of other cultural mores that Foreman didn’t question. Or it could be largely motivated by the need for a certain kind of ending. I’m not a film historian, so maybe these questions have already been addressed. If so, feel free to leave a comment about it.

High Noon is a classic tale of a man who is torn between his duty and love. Gary Cooper stars as Will Cain, a sheriff of small town Hadleyville, NM, who has just gotten married to Amy played by Grace Kelly. Amy is a Quaker and in deference to her pacifist beliefs, Will is turning in his badge. But just as the newlyweds are preparing to leave town for a new life, Will learns that a criminal, Frank Miller, he put behind bars is being paroled and arriving in town on the 12 noon train for a showdown. Tension fills the air as the anticipated showdown draws closer. Amy begs for Will to leave with her, but he knows he can’t run away. He must stay and defend the town and his honor. Will finds himself alone in the battle as everyone in town, including his deputy sheriff Harvey Pell, played by Lloyd Bridges, have turned away from him. The film is just a little over 80 minutes long and it unfolds in essentially real time on the screen. Director Fred Zinnemann effectively uses clocks to convey the time ticking away towards the battle. The movie is filled with tension as the showdown draws near and Mr. Cooper brilliantly plays his part for which he won his second Best Actor Oscar. Tex Ritter, John’s father, sings the Oscar winning song, “Don’t Forsake Me” which perfectly captures the essence of the film. High Noon is not only a classic western, but a classic American film.

After the success of the Gundam movies, Yoshiyuki Tomino moved onto to two sequels series, Gundam Z and ZZ. Finally, after the all this time, Tomino decided it was time for Amuro and Char’s last mission in a full-length Gundam movie. The fans went wild.

The story takes off in the year UC 0093. Without any explanation at this time, Char is now the leader of Neo Zeon and plans to send the Earth into a nuclear winter as well as defeat his long-time nemesis, Amuro. But with many old and new characters mixed up in this battle, it won’t be pretty.

CHARACTERS
Amuro: Returning to the battlefield, now being a responsible adult.
Char: Conferming his hatred when on Earth, he is the new leader of Neo Zeon.
Bright Noa: The former captain of the White Base is still in action.
Mirai: The wife of Bright Noa now and mother of two children.
Hathaway: Bright’s son who ventures out into space.
Quess: A cocky rich daughter who runs off with Neo Zeon.
Gyunei: Char’s pupil with Newtype abilities.
Cameron: Mirai’s ex-fiance who is now works for the economy.
Lalah Sune: Despite being dead, her ghost still haunts the dreams of Amuro and Char.

The animation for a 1980′s film is top notch. The funnels moves about at an insane pace battling each other across the screen. Its a marvel to witness. What this film tried to do was cram as much content and action as it could into two hours and they did a great job at that. The original voice actors from the English version of the TV series make their debut once again. They all do a relatively good job and are almost on par with the Japanese cast.

The audio is quite impressive as well. You get both language tracks in either 2.0 or 5.1 Dolby. An interesting note is that the Japanese track has not been remixed as it was with the three Gundam movies. This marks as the first Tomino Gundam feature not to have been tampered with so go nuts. Sadly, the English track falls back on all those sounds you heard in the remix versions of Gundam.

The extras hold up pretty well, but aren’t really groundbreaking. There are two theatrical trailers for the movie, but without it being in widescreen form, you feel you’ve lost something. The other extra is the Gundam model music video which shows how models are put into production. Not all that fun, but still informative. The last extra is a filmography of all of Tomino’s works which is nice if you haven’t seen it yet.

Overall, Char’s Counterattack ended up being everything I hoped it would. Raging Newtypes battling each other furiously in mobile suits. I couldn’t ask for better than this.

Where would anime be nowadays without series like “Mobile Suit Gundam?” I shudder to think. Very few anime have had the impact that “Gundam” has had since it first premiered in 1979. No one foresaw what was to become of the series. In 1988 this is the ultimate result; the greatest battle in anime history.

“Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack” was made to provide closure to a rivalry that had been going on for nearly ten years. The rivalry being between the two main characters of the original “Mobile Suit Gundam,” the first Gundam pilot, Amuro Ray, and the dreaded Zeon ace, Char Aznable. The story takes place in Universal Century 0093, about 14 years after the events in “Mobile Suit Gundam,” and peace has been disrupted once again (how long does peace actually last in this universe?). The long-dormant Char Aznable has risen to take the reigns of leadership of the Neo-Zeon movement, and ultimately plans on destroying the Earth Federation. The Federation, in retaliation, send out their Lando Bell Force to stop Char. Among one of the top members of Lando Bell, is none other than Amuro Ray. The two men still sport grudges against one another even after fourteen years, and it all comes down to this moment. Who will survive?

Bandai took some great risks in bringing this title to the States. Considering that there is 3 series worht of backstory to this movie, an excess of 150 episodes. It is easy to see people who have not followed “Mobile Suit Gundam.” Thankfully, Bandai has included a 12-page booklet with the DVD to tell exactly what happened that sparked up between Char and Amuro over these fourteen years. As well as terminology and who’s who in this Gundam story. Even if you know all these things, the booklet is a great collector’s item. Anyway, on to the big stuff.

The story is handsomely well-played out. Events move at such an erratic pace that one can’t help but to let the film sweep them in. One minute, everything is calm and characters are learning, in the next minute, explosions everywhere and people are dead. This is by all means a war story that rivals even “Star Wars.” When people die in “Gundam”…they die, no two ways about it. War is not galmorized in this series, war is a last resort for a race of creatures that deliberatly leads itself towards a last resort. And humanity? Well I heard Yoshiyuki Tomino speak on this matter, and since he is the “Father of Gundam” his words are better than mine; “No matter how destructive they can be, humanity is still beautiful.” A theme that has been a staple of “Gundam” ever since.

Characters are well-portrayed in this movie, bringing forth an array of new blood as well as old faces. Char and Amuro have grown and matured over the course of time. Amuro has turned from the whiny kid who refused to pilot Gundam into a hardened battle veteran who realizes his duties and responsibilities. Char has turned from a bitter Zeon soldier into an idealistic leader who wants nothing more than the destruction of those who Considering that Tomino didn’t have fifty episodes to tell a story like he always does (kidding), to analyze these characters and flesh them out in a span of 2 hours is quite a feat. Lives are changed through out this conflict, and it can be seen in the characters horrified expressions and anguished cries.

The animation is very well-done for it’s time. This is definitely movie-quality animation. Especially during the climactic battle scenes. Very few anime have been able to conduct battle scenes this chaotic and destructive without losing something, this is one of the few. It’s nice to see something that a nearly fifteen year-old movie can hold its own against “higher quality” stuff nowadays.

Speaking of animation, this movie features the best-looking mecha to date. The mecha in this film were designed by Yutaka Izubuchi, most famous for “Patlabor” and “Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket.” It was also helped by, at the time, the young members of GAINAX, yup before they made “Furi Kuri,” “Kare Kano,” “Evangelion,” “Gunbuster,” or even “Wings of Honeiamise,” they were doing little animation projects for Sunrise. If you don’t believe me, check out the designs for Char’s Sazabi and Amuro’s Nu Gundam. The Gundam featured in this movie is probably the coolest Gundam featured in any medium that carries the name.

The music also goes very well with the movie. Music is actually fully-orchestrated and helps define the tremendous epic nature of this film. It is very difficult not to be moved by some of these tremendous pieces. Definitely, a big change of pace for those who are familiar with the techno-beat of “Gundam Wing” or the trendy pop of “Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.” This is “Bravehaert” meets “Star Wars,” and if that isn’t epic, I don’t know what is.

Sound was used very well in the film. Bandai decided to compliment both Japanese and English tracks with both 2.0 and 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtracks. What does that mean? Well, just crank up the volume and listen to things go BOOM.

The only flaws I have seen in the movie would be the tremendous backstory that might alienate those who haven’t seen “Gundam.” That, and the ending is not feasible the first time one watches it. However, one of the key reasons to own this is so you can watch the anime again and realize what the ending means. And to those who have already seen the movie; yes the ending DOES make sense, the hint is actually in the film.

In the end, “Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack” is quite possibly the best “Gundam” title to date. Providing closure to the greatest anime rivalry of all time was no easy task. But Tomino was able to pull it off with grace. This is an epic by every means of the word. A sure sign that “Gundam” is synonomous with “eternal.”

It’s worth noting that you’ve been watching a cut version of this story all these years; read this from the Restoration Team website:

“[The film copies had] seven seconds of cuts to episode two and ten seconds of cuts to episode four. The most likely reason for these cuts is either physical damage to the transmission videotape or physical splice edits in the tapes, both of which might be expected to produce disturbing picture off-locks in the film recording.

It was decided to reinstate all the audio material back into the episode, leaving Peter Crocker with the problem of how to fill seven black holes in the picture! Using various combinations of cutaways, composite images and retiming, he was able to cover all the holes. Although this will obviously differ from what what would have been seen originally, it does at least allow the story to be enjoyed uncut for the first time since its transmission in 1964.”

This is Terry Nation’s first non-Dalek story, their popularity was still in the ascendancy when Nation delivered this script. The only other time he went Dalek-less was the “Avenger” like Android Invasion. Mr Nation’s strong points were ideas to capture the imagination, but with this story his weaknesses are revealed, he simple couldn’t write easy flowing natural dialogue in the same way as Whittaker or Spooner. This was also the earliest of the quest like stories which later came out as The Chase, The E-space trilogy, the Key to Time season, and the Black Guardian trilogy. The reason for Hartnell’s disappearance for episode three and four was he was on two weeks holiday, and it worked wonders, he comes back in episode five completely invigorated with no fluffs or dries.

~~~~
With six new sets required each week and only one designer (Ray Cusick).
This story does appear to have more production problems then most early Hartnell stories, example: when the secret entrance door swings open you catch a glimpse of one of the set workers operating it.
Episode four, “The Snows of Terror” sums up exactly why I always rate sixties Who above any other decade, and that is when Vasor is alone with Barbara he attempts to rape her. Very strong stuff for an early evening TV show. (A similar incident occurs with Edith in, “The Time Meddler”.)
This touching on some of societies taboos was avoided in later decades. Which I felt was a shame, as it gave it an extra edge of realism.
(Brief synopsis)
Episode One, Sea of Death, Arbitan stops the Tardis crew gaining entrance to the TARDIS. Forcing them on the quest for the four keys.
Episode Two, The Velvet Web, here in the city of Morphoton you can get anything you wish for, or so it appears.
Episode Three, The Screaming Jungle, in the jungle, scientists have speeded up plant growth, to a frightening degree!
Episode Four, The Snows of Terror, On the Icy tundra they meet a fur trapper called Vasor, who seems a nice man.
Episode Five, Sentence of Death, The travellers encounter a society in which the legal system is, guilty until proven innocent.
Episode Six, The Keys of Marinus, returning to the Island but only to find, trouble.
Overall opinion, not a classic story but the changing locations help to maintain ones interest.
Movie buff trivia. What has this story got in common with the film Citizen Kane,……..Answer George Couloris starred in both.
Both of Ranma 1/2 movies are great. They both deal with someone abducting Akane. If I had to choose I would say the 2nd movie was better. Mainly because of the fights at the end. All of the main characters get to battle one of the bad guys.
The first movie deals with Akane being kidnapped by the cult of pickle worshipers…I am serious. Ranma has to battle all each of the 7 lucky god’s martial artists. The movie is slow at the beginning, but picks up past towards the middle.
The second movie is about Akane being kidnapped by a young prince. The main cast has been stranded on a deserted island. The twist in this movie is he kidnaps every women he sees and pits them in a contest for his hand in marriage. This movie has some great fan service. The girls have on some of the most revealing bathing suits you will ever see. Ukyou is the standout winner on this front.
I know there must be a little concern over the price. $49 for 2 movies? In context it isn’t an unreasonable price. When they first came out on VHS is was $34.99 per movie. I know because I paid that. I have seen the price as low at $42 on this site. It may seem like a lot but your getting your getting your money’s worth.
The Ranma 1/2 Movie DVD Box Set is a two disc set. The first disc contains the first Ranma 1/2 movie, Big Trouble in Nekonron, China. The second disc contains the second Ranma 1/2 movie, Nihao My Concubine. However, neither disc contains any special features.
While the films themselves were very enjoyable, I was disappointed that all this two disc set had were the movies. The runtime for the first film is 81 minutes, and the runtime for the second film is 59 minutes. With such short runtimes, both films could have easily fit onto one disc. However, between releasing the films in a two-disc box set, and not including any special features, it comes across that Viz Media was more interested in finding a way to be able to charge as much as possible and not put much effort into the release. By putting the films into a two-disc set, Viz Media seemed to feel they were justified to charge the same amount for this set as for the episode box sets. Personally, I feel that the set, as it is now, is a ripoff.
While I enjoy Ranma 1/2, I think Viz Media is charging too much for this set. If you are a Ranma 1/2 fan and want to have everything on DVD, then you do need to acquire this set to complete your collection. However, I would recommend seeing if you can find it for a better price, either because a retail outlet regularly sells it for a lower price, or the set is lowered during a sales promotion. Or, as a last resort, you can always wait for the price to fall naturally, because the set has been out for a long enough time that Viz Media feels they’ve gotten as many sales as they can at the higher price. However, it could still be a couple of years before that happens, so you might have to wait a while for that option.
One of the most talked about films in decades; thought I would add my 2 cents as a late entry.
Buy,Download, Or Stream The Passion of the Christ! Click Here
I think the root controversy about the film has to do with the question of whether or not it has artistic merit for a viewer without faith. I think this is a fair question, as I never really understood the idea that religion offers, so to speak, an excuse for ugly artwork. Arguably there is no such excuse, unless one of the points of religious art is to repel people who don’t already share the faith.
The film has been labeled violent, which it is; but unfair here has been the label that it is in some sense unusually violent. It is not. There are hundreds of films that are far more violent. Perhaps this film is even less violent than average. It is perhaps even less violent than the blockbuster version of Gandhi of some years back starring Bergen Kingsley, of which the Passion has reminded me somewhat; at any rate they are at least in the same ball park. Rather, the distinctive mark of the Passion is that it invites us to keep the humanity of the victim of violence in full view; not to distance ourselves by, say, feeling contempt or anger towards the victim as a bump-off-able bad guy, or seeing the victim as a replaceable curiosity, a dispensable nitwit. In the Gandhi movie, for example, the majority of the acts of violence are against victims who are more or less, cinematically speaking, dispensable nitwits. All we see Gandhi suffer is being shot at the end (and even that, at the beginning also, setting up a flashback)-and a few blows to the head (from which he recovers).
Yet the character to suffer the violence in this film is not only the main character, it is a character who is anything but a dispensable nitwit. He is unambiguously portrayed as is in the Gospels–a perfect human being-and more: a Divine Person. No doubt faith is helpful here, but if the viewer can so much as entertain the premise as a possibility, then I would say that the movie is as beautiful as it is emotionally powerful. Yet even apart from that premise, the film also powerfully portrays deep love and friendships between human beings, which has surely a beauty of its own even under heart wrenching circumstances. Moreover, in what is surely one of, if not the most violent sequences in the film-the scourging (the soldiers carrying out the order, one in particular, wind up going over the top in enthusiasm)-we only see the victim about half the time; the rest of the time we see shots of peoples’ faces, notably his friends, mostly of the face of his mother. The film does show us the anatomical side of the violence enough so that we really understand what is happening-but no more; the point is what it MEANS for it to be happening. In this film suffering is given a human face.
It is quite a unique experience. First, breaking out of the package of being “mere cinema,” there are two points of honesty of the film even apart from any faith claim. (1) by all serious accounts, Jesus of Nazareth was at the least an exceptional human being; yet death by crucifixion was no walk in the park. (2) by all serious reflections, in one way or another-regardless of how you slice it (whether from the point of view of any religion or from the point of view of atheism)-humanity really hasn’t treated God any better than the main character gets treated in this film. This is a film which portrays God as staying with humanity despite the way it has treated him (and the way human beings have treated each other). The violence is not for it own sake; still less is it for the sake either of sadism or of a narrator stepping off the screen to address the audience with guilt trips (shaming and flagellating the viewer); it is for the sake of thoughtfully presenting this possibility in an artistic way. Second, rather that allowing the audience the space to distance themselves from characters undergoing violence, this film actually does the opposite: it prods the audience to see NONE of the characters as dispensable nitwits, not even those who are committing the violence. The anti-Semitism charge is simply a non-sequitur. It’s not anti-anybody.
This film firmly establishes the talent of Gibson as a director. He visually portrays what I have described without being artificial or saccharine, making use of a remarkable eye for symbolism and a good sense of timing; he plainly knows how to tell a story blending sight and sound. I will give two examples which I found especially powerful; they are even related. One is where Gibson shifts back and forth from shots of the feet of the roman soldiers standing in pools of his blood as they scourge him, to shots of the feet of the Apostles as he was symbolically washing them. The other is a subtle, nonverbal portrayal of the conversion of a roman soldier which spans in a sense the entire film. This conversion story is visually framed from the film’s opening scenes when a temple guard has his ear miraculously restored after it is sliced off in a struggle by one of the Apostles. The guard remains for some time on his knees, as if so overcome by the experience he cannot move. The roman solider to be converted is subtly introduced in the next scenes (he is one of the soldiers Mary Magdalene complains to about the arrest), but we see him from time to time throughout the movie, witnessing and being influenced by various events; in a final scene, blood and water falls upon his eyes, flowing from the side of the deceased victim that he pierces with a lance (though first non-verbally apologizing to the mother; he does it merely to confirm he is dead), and he falls to his knees in a way which resonates with the action of the temple guard. The temple guard, so to speak, had his hearing restored; the roman soldier, so to speak, his sight. On the side of deep friendships, notable are the relationships between Jesus, his mother, Mary Magdalene and the youngest Apostle, John. One moment uniting this dimension to the above examples is when John stumbles and falls on his knees before the two Marys (running to them to tell them of Jesus’ arrest)-to be followed by John later seeing Mary’s agony as she watches her son fall to his knees as he carries the cross. The kneeling image in general is itself also framed by beautiful opening and closing scenes invoking a folding together of earth and sky (the first providing the backdrop of Jesus falling to his knees in his agony in the garden; the second entailing powerful from-the-ground-up and from-the-sky-down shots of the moment of his death on the cross). Here resonating throughout is the film’s awesome musical score. I would add that the use of Aramaic in the film punctuated with subtitles was nothing less than masterful; I am not even aware of the film being in a “foreign language.”
Acting was good but special mention needs to go to Maia Morgenstern, who played the mother. In interviews she said she played the character from the point of view of a mother who loved her son; the result is one of the most moving and beautiful character portrayals in all of cinema.
If you are looking for popcorn-eating entertainment, this is not the film to watch. (Even during gladiatorial times at the Colosseum this movie would have gotten thumbs down.) But if you are in the mood for a thought-provoking treatment of religious themes in a serious, sensitive and artistic way, then by all means see the film.
Although I say it is the “greatest” motion picture ever made, it is not the “best” motion picture ever made. Why is it the greatest? Impact. Of the myriad films that I have seen in my life, none has had such a gripping effect on me physically, mentally and spiritually. I left the screening with a knot in my chest. What, in fact, was the “impact?”
Certainly the graphic scourging of Jesus Christ, one of the most painful and truly agonizing sequences in film history, has much to do with it. The brutality of the Romans, who were masters of the art of torture, is depicted so realistically (and quite probably toned down in the film) that watching it was overwhelming. This is isn’t meant to be a spoiler: just put on your seatbelts when you go see this movie. And you really should see it if you have a passion for the cinema. It’s an astonishing piece of work, and the acting is flawless.
It has one weak scene that should simply be edited out: a brief flashback to establish that Jesus is a carpenter, in which he has just finished building a “modern” table, and his mother Mary says that the idea or concept will never catch on. That scene is a piece of creative license that I wouldn’t have taken, although it’s not entirely unforgivable. It’s the film’s only light moment. From there on, get ready for the most harrowing visual experience in human suffering that has ever been brought to the screen.
[...] Returning to the film, I found the violence extremely disturbing, but not the sort of violence that would breed or encourage violence. Let me explain: the violence in this film cannot be compared to the violence in movies like XXX, for example, which is purely for entertainment purposes in that type of pop-corn flick. The violence in The Passion is not intended to entertain. I cannot conceive a child or an adolescent wanting to immitate the violence in this film, as supposedly has been the case in connection with other TV shows and movies in the past. The depiction of violence here shows the extremes of man’s inhumanity to man.
This motion picture is a difficult, painful, incredibly disturbing an enlightening experience. It took me at least a few hours to come down from its effect. Yes, it will deeply affect you, especially if you are a Christian as I am. Yet, I cannot classify it as a religious movie. It’s the story of a man who preached perfect love, forgiveness, and peace, and who fell victim to envy and, consequently, was killed for no other crime than “love thy neighbor”. That is the human aspect of the movie.
There is also the spiritual: the constant emotional and psychological flogging of the devil, played by a brilliant actress whose name escapes me; the reason why Jesus, called Yeshua, allowed himself to be captured, tortured and crucified
when, as the Son of God, he had the power to prevent what he willingly did–to sacrifice his life for the redemption of mankind; and how he stripped the devil of all power by his death on the cross and resurrection. There is much, much more, but each viewer, based on her or his beliefs, will interpret the spiritual impact of the film upon them in their own way.
For students of film, this is a must. No movie is as powerful as this one. Period. It is a perfect example of the “power” of the seventh art, which is the cinema.
If there is a must-see movie thus far this millennium, it is this masterpiece! Parents should take heed to the R rating!!! It’s visually too overwhelming for small children. But for mature adults, highly recommended! But do fasten your seatbelts, as I said. It is one astonishing ride!
